I've always thought of ASUS more as a motherboard company than an optical drive manufacturer. For their latest optical offering they've reengineered a Pioneer drive which is a solid starting point.
The DRW-1608P is a good example of what we've come to expect from ASUS. Based on the Pioneer DVR-109, this affordably priced drive offers an impressive number of features and some of the fastest DVD reading and writing speeds available. While normally a winning combination, there were a few things that kept the DRW-1608P from getting top marks in our review
